The resolution in question was a 2006 election year exercise in sleazy politics by the GOP. They loaded up a fifth anniversary 9/11 memorial resolution with endorsements of Bush administration policies to put Democrats into a political trap where they could be criticized no matter how they voted. Tammy Baldwin did the honorable thing. She voted against it. As she explained:
"This bill was cynically transformed from a memorial resolution to an endorsement of President Bush's failed policies. The Republicans show enormous disrespect to the 9/11 victims and families by playing election year politics with something as solemn as the fifth anniversary of 9/11; I will vote against the bill."The "old Tommy" was a formidable campaigner, but he would never have done this. But he changed after he went to Washington. It's also a tactic that smacks of desperation and may well backfire -- people might start looking more closely at Thompson's own 9/11 record. They won't like what they see.
